Birch Retro Fit Stair Treads

Retrofit treads and risers are often a relief to those homeowners who dread of completely renovating a staircase. With retrofit parts, there’s no need to remove entire steps. Retrofit parts are measured to fit over your existing staircase, making a DIY project or professional installation much simpler.

Generally, retro-fitting stair treads is the simplest solution for the DIY homeowner looking to update their staircase. This is especially true for homeowners who simply want to remove carpet from their stairs, but don’t want to completely renovate. In this case, retrofit treads and risers are measured to replace the current stairs. After removing carpet, it’s a simple process of installing the replacement treads over the current ones.

There are also many additional benefits to investing in retrofit stair treads: they are cost saving, time saving, and the ease of installation is much less labor intensive.

Our standard retro fit treads come in 3/4" and 5/8" thick.

Sizing

Our Traditional Stair Treads can be made up to 72” long and 11 1/2” deep.

*Custom options are available as well. Contact us here, or call our sales team at 1(800)-586-5864*

Nosing

Nosing hangs over the edge of the tread and helps prevent people from tripping. This functional feature can be made beautiful with details like bullnose or eased edge.

Return Treads

Returns are designed for staircases with open sides . A left or right hand return is determined by standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up. A double return (open on both sides) will need the inside measurement to order properly. See our how to measure diagrams for proper measuring of your double return treads. If your stairs are contained within walls, you will need a straight/box tread.

Returns are 1-1/4" wide and extend 1-1/4" past the back side of the tread. Our return treads are measured plus the returns. If you order a 48" Left Return, your "throat" size will be 48" plus the return for a 49 1/4" total length.

Finish

For best results, treads should be finished to protect the wood. We can pre-finish your stair treads using our proprietary acrylic based finishes. We offer semi-gloss, satin, or matte finish. Unfinished is available to allow for personalization. You can also choose to add a stain to your treads. We offer stain match services if you would like your stairs to match another wooden surface in your home.

Textures

We offer various texture options on all our wood stair treads including hand-scraping , wire brushing and even a reason look. If you prefer to have your stair treads sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.

The Wire Brushed Texture works best on wood with an open grain such as White Oak, Red Oak, and Ash. On other tighter grain wood species, the Wire Brushed Texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.

Care information

Stair treads, whether pre finished or unfinished are made up of kiln dried hardwood lumber. Like flooring, these stair treads must be stored in a dry climate controlled space with similar climate as to where they will be installed. Stair treads MUST NOT be left in a garage or basement. Acclimation to the environment is recommended. The pre finished treads should be placed back in the original box with spacers and laid flat. Unfinished treads may be stacked on each other flat. DO NOT LEAVE STAIR TREADS STANDING UP OR LEANING AGAINST A WALL FOR ACCLIMATION. DO NOT STACK PRE FINISHED TREADS FACE TO FACE WITHOUT SPACERS.

When you receive your order from Hardwood Stairs Direct, please inspect each one for damage, color, and size. Once your stair tread has been cut, modified or installed we will not accept a return or claim for damage, color, or size.
